AT&T Weekend Preview: January 4-5

By Chris Lotsbom

(03-Jan) -- The first weekend of 2014 will be a busy one at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory, with the Hispanic Games taking center stage on Saturday, January 4.

For years, the Hispanic Games has been one of the most competitive early season indoor track and field meets in the northeast. More than 6,000 athletes are scheduled to take part in 2014.

Due to the recent snowstorm that hit New York City on Thursday evening, Friday's portion of the Hispanic Games has been postponed to Saturday, making for a one-day meet that is sure to provide plenty of excitement. A complete and updated meet schedule can be found here.

Among the athletes to watch for on Saturday are Garden City junior Emma Gallagher in the Girls Invitational 400m, West Genesee's Laura Leff in the Girls Invitational Mile, and the national champion 4x200m relay team from Medgar Evers Prep. Among the Boys competing, keep an eye on Smithtown East's Benjamin Bonhurst, one of the nation's best shot putters, and Kiambu Gall in the Invitational 400m. Gall won the 300m at the PSAL Holiday Classic in the nation's fastest time this season, 34.00 seconds.

On Sunday, both the CHSAA Junior Weight and Novice meet and the New Jersey Catholic Conference Championships will be held.

In 2013, Pope John won both the Boys and Girls New Jersey Catholic Conference titles. Red Bank Catholic, Christian Brothers Academy, and St. Benedict's Prep likely will all challenge for wins come Sunday.

Not to be forgotten, on Monday is The Armory Middle School Championships presented by the New York Road Runners.
