The Armory Welcomes Topflight Student-Athletes to U.S. Air Force Hispanic Games on January 9th-10th
Last January, student-athletes showcased their outstanding track & field talents and were honored for their academic success during the two-day U.S. Air Force Hispanic Games. Photos courtesy of Armory Track NEW YORK, January 4, 2021 – The 27th Annual U.S. Air Force Hispanic Games will take place January 9-10 on the renowned “Fastest Track in the World” at The Armory New Balance Track & Field Center in Washington Heights. “We are pleased to welcome the U.S. Air Force back to The Armory and their support of student athletes during these times is invaluable” remarked Rita Finkel, Co-President of The Armory Foundation, “Everyone has been working so hard through difficult circumstances”. The U.S. Air Force Hispanic Games is one of the country’s most recognized indoor sporting events and this edition includes many of the top metropolitan area track & field student-athletes. In recent years, many athletes at the Hispanic Games posted U.S. No. 1 performances at The Armory, the home of the historic Millrose Games. “For 27 years, this track & field meet has jump-started The Armory’s New Year” said Armory Foundation Co-President Jonathan Schindel, “and gives us the chance to pay homage to the rich tapestry of Washington Height and the enormous contributions of our Hispanic community.”
Top student-athletes included in this meet are James Onwuka of Newburgh Free Academy, NY, who is currently New York’s No. 4 in the 400m; and Katie Altieri of Susan Wagner High School, NY, who is currently in the top 50 in the U.S. in the 3,000 meters and ranked No. 5 in New York and was No. 10 in the United States in the 5,000 meters this fall. “We are excited to continue our partnership with the Armory Foundation for the 2021 U.S. Air Force Hispanic Games and recognize the hard-working student-athletes competing in the event,” said Major Jason Wyche, Air Force Recruiting Service Chief of National Events Branch. “Through these challenging times, the Air Force remains committed to supporting our partners and their efforts, as well as inspiring young adults.” The U.S. Air Force Hispanic Games were created in 1994 to honor Washington Heights and its Latino community. There will be a special “U. S. Air Force Leaders of Tomorrow” recognition event during welcoming ceremonies honoring 12 student-athletes who excel in the classroom. This year’s U. S.
